Quick Review: Ion Stove

This is a gem of simplicity and efficiency, an ideal alcohol burner for the solo hiker who isn’t in a hurry. I have combined this tiny burner with a .85 liter titanium pot and a homemade windscreen and been able to boil two cups of water with only ½ ounce of alcohol. The burner weighs only 0.46 ounces (13 grams). It was designed by Ernest Engman (Sgt. Rock) and is available from http://www.ionstove.com/ for only $5.00. The obvious advantage, besides its light weight and tiny size, is that it is so efficient you can carry less fuel than for other stoves. Less fuel, light burner, less weight to carry.

Although it is designed for one, I have used it successfully for two people when we use dehydrated food. Then we need only boil two cups of water – sometimes less depending on the dish – and add the water to the food. Engman also sells a neat titanium pot stand, titanium to make a windscreen, an attachment that lest the stove simmer and a variety of kits.

UPDATE: Sgt. Rock is no longer building and selling the ion. Here are the plans to make your own: Ion Plans.
